Mosquito Bits can help suppress fungus gnat larvae, but they are primarily designed for mosquito larvae in standing water.
While both products contain B.T.I. (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis), the delivery method and application environment are completely different.
Why Gnatrol Works Better for Fungus Gnats
Gnatrol WDG is a fast-dissolving, high-concentration B.T.I. formulation designed specifically for fungus gnat larvae living in:
- Soil
- Coco coir
- Hydroponic systems
- Deep water culture
- Moist growing media
Once activated in water, Gnatrol releases B.T.I. quickly to target fungus gnat larvae immediately at the stage where they are most vulnerable. Because it dissipates relatively fast, repeat applications every 5–7 days are recommended to fully break the fungus gnat life cycle.
Gnatrol contains:
- 37.4% B.T.I. active ingredient
Why Mosquito Bits Work Better for Mosquito Larvae
Mosquito Bits are designed for slow release in standing water where mosquito larvae live and feed.
Instead of dissolving immediately like Gnatrol, the corn granules slowly release B.T.I. over time, allowing continued mosquito larvae control for up to 14 days in water sources such as:
- Bird baths
- Rain barrels
- Ponds
- Gutters
- Water features
- Standing water
Mosquito Bits contain:
- 2.86% B.T.I. active ingredient
The lower percentage does NOT mean the product is weak — it is specifically engineered for long-term release in aquatic environments.
Important Difference
Do not compare these products by B.T.I. percentage alone.
- Gnatrol = fast-release, high-concentration treatment for fungus gnat larvae in growing media
- Mosquito Bits = slow-release treatment for mosquito larvae in standing water
Each product is designed for a different pest environment and delivery method.
Best Use Recommendations
✔ Use Gnatrol WDG for:
- Fungus gnats
- Houseplants
- Hydroponics
- Coco coir
- Indoor growing
✔ Use Mosquito Bits for:
- Mosquito larvae
- Standing water
- Bird baths
- Water gardens
- Outdoor mosquito control
Important Notes
- Gnatrol can help control mosquito larvae, but it dissipates too quickly to be ideal for standing water treatment.
- Mosquito Bits can help suppress fungus gnats, but they are significantly less effective than Gnatrol for heavy indoor infestations.
Mosquito Bits - For Mosquitoes (Not for Fungus Gnats)
Summit Mosquito Bits, manufactured by Summit Chemical, is a granular biopesticide that can easily spread across the surface of various types of standing water to treat larvae of mosquitos.
As an environmental friendly mosquito control product, it will safely treat these irritating pests once they ingest the granules without harming desired aquatic life.
Summit Mosquito Bits is a organic bacterium insecticide that can provide safety by eliminating the larvae of mosquitoes that may transmit zika, West Nile Virus, and other mosquito-borne diseases.
Tools Needed
Summit Mosquito Bits may be applied with a teaspoon, tablespoon or hand spread.
Teaspoons and tablespoons cannot be reused for eating purposes or other means.
How to Use
- Step 1: Determine how much Summit Mosquito Bits to use by calculating the square footage of the water surface or soil to be treated. To do this, measure the length and width of the treatment area in feet and multiply (length X width = square footage). For small areas of standing water, apply 1 teaspoon of Summit Mosquito Bits per 25 sq. ft. of water or 1 tablespoon of product per 75 sq. ft. of water. For larger areas of standing water, use 4 oz. of product per 1,000 sq. ft. of clean water and for polluted or greater organic content in water apply at 8 oz. of product per 1,000 sq. ft. of water surface. Mix 4 tablespoons of product per 1 gallon of water for fungus gnat larvae control in soil or growing media surface.
- Step 2: Open the Summit Mosquito Bits container with a gloved hand and load the appropriate amount of product into your hand spreader, tablespoon, or teaspoon. Stand directly above the area to be treated or near the water edge to let the water push the product further into the center of large water sites.
Where to Use
Summit Mosquito Bits may be applied to standing water around homes and residential properties such as water gardens, pools, funeral urns, old automobile tires, flower pots, saucers, roof gutters, unused cisterns, unused swimming pools, bird baths, tree holes, animal watering troughs, ditches, rain barrels, other water storage containers, bromeliads, pitcher plants that holds water, woodland pools, any stagnant water where mosquito larvae occur.
When to Use
Summit Mosquito Bits works best when applied prior to larvae laying season or periods of heavy rainfall, typically this will be from March to August (early spring to summer).
Safety Information
Summit Mosquito Bits is safe to use around children or pets when applied according to the product label instructions. Always wear the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when mixing or applying this product.
Do not apply directly to treated, finished drinking water reservoirs or drinking water receptacles when water is intended for human consumption.
